Why fashion matters to your career!?!

Whilst being conscientious and dedicated will improve your career prospects no end, your image and appearance are also crucial in creating the right impression in the workplace. Although it can often prove difficult to successfully achieve the right balance between smart work wear and showing a little of your personality and fashion style – it can be done if you know what to look for!?!

So read on to discover our top 5 tips on how to create a failsafe work wardrobe!?!?

1. This season promises to be a year when coats will shine in a variety of styles and shapes. A
stylish coat is a fashion essential as its one of the first things people will see when you walk through a door. Splurging on one quality coat or jacket for the winter is always worthwhile as it will be worn almost daily and can make less expensive clothes look better designed!!?

2. Don’t be afraid of colour!!
Bold colours are everywhere this season and there’s no reason why you can’t wear brighter shades to work. If you are used to dressing in darker clothing – just add a touch of colour with a simple scarf or cardigan.

3. Invest wisely in your
accessories and they can be a fantastic wardrobe staple. A well chosen quality belt, watch or wallet will last you for years and will help to smarten up your look in an instant.

4. Air conditioning plays havoc with your body temperature in an office environment, so always layer your outfit during the colder months to enable you to add or shed clothing as required!?! A v neck
jumper or cardigan looks great when worn with a shirt underneath and never fails to make a good impression!!

5. Always remember to dress comfortably as your outfit will have to last all day. A great alternative to a shirt is a
polo shirt – comprising of a cross between a shirt and a t-shirt, the collar makes them look instantly smarter and adds that little something extra without compromising on comfort!?!

Here at
Lapels we have all the very latest designs for the style conscious connoisseur!!! Why not take a look at our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and see which design suits your style!?!

Gift vouchers - the perfect gift for everyone!?!

Come on be honest, how many times have you received a clothing gift that despite being bought with care was just not to your taste, and not wanting to cause offence – you have accepted the gift, worn the offending item twice and then condemned it to a lifetime of gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe?!?

If we’re all honest – I suspect the answer to both these questions is more than once!?! In our ever changing world it is becoming increasingly difficult to pick clothing as the choice available becomes greater and tastes change from season to season. So, taking everything into account - would it not be wiser to purchase
gift vouchers instead and let them choose the perfect gift for themselves?!?

Of course it would!! If your family and friends love fashion – then they will love shopping at Lapels!! So why not spend your money wisely, save your aching legs and take the stress out of shopping by opting for a Lapel
gift voucher the next time you need a special present for that awkward somebody in your life?!?

Mrs B wrote:

‘I just wanted to drop you a little line to say thank you for your brilliant customer service. I tried to order a product online last week but cancelled it half way through as I lost my WIFI connection. I was planning on ordering later in the day again but received a phone call from you to ask if I was having problems and if I wanted to order over the phone, which I did and despite it being a Friday afternoon the product was delivered on Monday morning. To cut a long story short I wanted to thank you for making it so simple and for such an efficient service. I will certainly be using you again. Many thanks Lapel.’

Fred Perry - the international playboy from Stockport!?!

We are very pleased to announce that Lapel Clothing is now an official stockist of the highly distinctive and renowned Fred Perry label.

Frederick John Perry was born in Stockport on 18th May 1909 and moved down to London with his mother and father when he was a young child. He attended school in Ealing which is where he fell in love with the sport of table tennis, and actually went on to win the World Championship at the tender age of 18.

Following his success at table tennis,
Fred Perry turned his attention to lawn tennis and his domination of the British tennis scene began. In 1933 he helped England to their first Davis Cup victory for over 21 years, and the following year he went on to win both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. In fact, he won the prestigious Wimbledon title for 3 years running and took all four grand slam singles titles before turning professional in 1936 aged just 27.

Fred Perry sportswear began with an idea for a sweat catching wrist band invented by the Austrian footballer, Tibby Wegner, who approached Fred in the late forties looking for an endorsement. Following a few design tweaks, a few weeks later the first ever sweatband was born, and
Fred Perry sportswear was in business!!! The brand grew quickly and diversified into other areas of sportswear designing shirts, polo’s and footwear to name but a few.

The Queen Mother once asked Fred why his shirts were better than anyone else’s, to which he replied, ‘Ma’am, it’s the shirt that fits’ cheekily quoting the company’s ad line of the time.

The famous Fred Perry
laurel is the iconic trade mark of the label and features on every product. The motif is based on an old Wimbledon symbol and signifies the brands heritage is firmly rooted in tennis history.

On the fiftieth anniversary of his Wimbledon title win in 1934, the Somerset Road entrance at Wimbledon was renamed the Fred Perry Gates and a statue of Fred was unveiled – a fitting tribute to a great sportsman and a true gentleman.

Fred Perry sportswear has now become a British menswear classic, and the simplicity and quality of each design has made Fred Perry a must have for every wardrobe. We are very proud to stock this iconic label here at Lapels, so why not check out our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and see British design at its very best!?

What NOT to get your girlfriend for Christmas?!?!

Following on from my ‘what not to get your boyfriend for Christmas’ post last week, I thought it was only fair to turn the tables and even up the score – hence this week I am looking at ‘what not to get your girlfriend for Christmas’!?!

So guys take note and make your girlfriend really happy this Christmas by not getting her something from the offending list below!?!

1. Firstly, despite what the store cashier may tell you - it’s probably better to avoid buying her underwear all together. If you opt for the comfy option it will look like something her mother might wear, and if you choose the frilly more feminine option then you run the risk of making her look like a hooker!?!

2. NEVER EVER buy a woman kitchen or cleaning utensils!!! The lady in the advert may well be happy with something that slices and dices, but believe me – your girlfriend will not be!?!

3. Never be tempted by any perfume with a slightly obscure name that is sold at a giveaway rock bottom price!!! Although it may well be a bargain, it will more than likely cause your girlfriend to come out in an allergic reaction whenever she wears it, and it will smell like a cross between pledge and air freshener!?!

4. If you’re going to buy her jewellery, always remember that although cubic zirconia may well look like a diamond to you – any woman will be able to spot the difference from a mile away!?!

5. There is nothing worse than watching your girlfriend unwrap her Christmas gift and seeing the disappointment register on her face when she finds Grand Theft Auto or any similar game!!! Repeat after me – under no circumstances is it acceptable to buy your girlfriend any computer game that is, in fact, for you!?!

As Christmas comes only once a year, think carefully about what you buy and try to pick something that suits her sense of style. Unfortunately, I can’t offer you any suggestions here as everyone is different and there is no magic one size fits all option!!! If you’re in need of some
inspiration, why not check out our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk – and if you do happen to stumble across that elusive one size fits all gift - can you let me know as well!?!

Wrist candy for the boys!?!

You only have to glance around as you’re walking down the street to see that jewellery is very quickly becoming the new must have accessory for men. Like every new trend though – get it wrong and you’ll end up looking like Mr T or worse still – become a laughing stock!?!

So what amount of jewellery is acceptable to wear??

1. When it comes to rings – less is most definitely more, unless you’re Fat Tony of course!?! Keep things simple with a wedding band or a no frills alternative and you won’t go far wrong. The same rule applies to wrist chains and necklaces – simple and understated will look far classier than the tacky playboy pendant!!!

2. There is no way to sugar coat this – earrings on men are just bad!!! The earring went out of fashion in the mid nineties and no matter who you are or how many diamonds you have encrusted into your earlobe – you will still look like an idiot wearing an earring!?!

3. More and more shirts are now being designed with cufflink holes instead of buttons, offering a great opportunity to add a little touch of your own personality to your outfit.
Paul Smith has a great selection of quirky and fun cufflinks in his latest collection all designed to help show off the more tongue in cheek side of your personality, whilst still oozing class and style.

4. A good watch is essential wrist candy for any man and can say a lot about you to the trained observer. A quality timepiece will tell the world you have good taste without you having to say a single word!! You invest in a fine watch for how it makes you feel each time you glance at it during the day – if each look fills you with pride then you can be sure you are wearing a great watch!!! The latest collection by
Ted Baker offers some great timepieces that exude elegance by the very simplicity of their design and for that reason will never date.

Ultimately, it will remain up to the wearer just how much or little jewellery to put on, and for some men shiny metal will always have an appeal!!! Choosing the right
accessories for you needn’t be complicated, and if you pick something that fits the rest of your wardrobe and suits your sense of style – you can’t go far wrong!?!

If you need some inspiration, why not check out our
website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk – Mr T need not apply!?!

What NOT to get your boyfriend for Christmas!?!

With every advert screaming they have found the perfect gift for your loved one this Christmas, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the choice of presents available. I could sit here and write a list as long as my arm of gift ideas to buy your boyfriend this Christmas, but as everyone is different – unfortunately there is no magic one size fits all option!?!

In the end, I decided it would be easier to make a list of what NOT to get your boyfriend this Christmas instead - so take a sneaky peak at the list below and make sure you haven’t committed one of the heinous crimes that is the duff present!?!?

1. Firstly, avoid at all costs the teddy bear or stuffed creature holding a giant red heart – in fact avoid anything with a heart on it just to be on the safe side!?!

2. Never be tempted by a scented candle. It may well be true that it will enhance the ambience of his room and provide a pleasant smell to cover up the odour of his sweaty gym socks that are stashed under his bed, but believe me – he will not thank you for a candle!!!

3. Stay away from the lure of the sock while you’re out Christmas shopping too, and leave this type of practical gift to his mum or sister!!!

4. We all know that most men could benefit from using some kind of skincare lotion or potion. Unfortunately 99% of the male population still seem to be in denial over facial care products, so buying him an expensive gift set is more than likely just going to be a waste of money!!!

5. If you decide to treat your boyfriend to a supporters gift pack or an all expenses paid trip to see his favourite football team play – make sure you check your facts first!?!?! Manchester United and Manchester City may sound similar, but all hell will break lose if you get them the wrong way round!?!?

6. There is nothing worse or more useless than Christmas novelty clothing!!! Take Christmas socks for example – you can only wear them for one week of the year and so each pair ends up lasting for years until you end up with a whole drawer full of them!!!

Christmas
shopping for your man needn’t be a chore if you know where to look – the trick is to try and find something that the masses haven’t all nipped out to buy during their lunch hour!?! If you’re in need of some inspiration, why not take a look at our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and complete your Christmas shopping in the click of a button!?!

The Schott Perfecto - as modelled by James Dean!?!

Leather jackets are one of those iconic fashion must haves that really stand the test of time and season, and are right up there with denim jeans when it comes to all round wear ability!?! Not all leather jackets are the same though, and the Schott Perfecto comes with a tale to tell and over 90 years of history embedded into every jacket made!!!

The story began in 1913 when two brothers, Irving and Jack Schott, started to make and sell raincoats from a basement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Just two short years later they opened their first factory in Staten Island, and Irving Schott branded his jackets with the name of his favourite cigar – the Perfecto jacket was born!?!

During the twenties, the
Schott brand set about revolutionising outdoor fashion and became the first brand to add a zip fastening to a jacket. This was followed by designing the very first leather motorcycle jacket in 1928 – 40 years before Harley Davidson!!!

During World War II, Schott was commissioned by the US Military to design and manufacture leather bomber jackets for the Air Corps and woollen pea coats for the navy – designs which would be worn by US servicemen for the next 60 years.

In 1954, Marlon Brando starred in the film ‘The Wild Ones’ and the image of him wearing his
Schott Perfecto became an overnight sensation. Add to that the iconic image of James Dean who was hardly ever seen without his Perfecto jacket - and the Perfecto’s place in fashion history was assured!?!

Now over 50 years on from the days of James Dean and Marlon Brando – the
Schott leather jacket remains synonymous with classic styling and quality workmanship. The company is still owned by the Schott family, and each leather jacket remains tailored by hand to the original quality standards drawn up by Irving Schott back in 1913.

Revealed - our number one choice for men's accessories!?!

If you stop anyone on the street and ask them to name a British designer, chances are they’ll name Paul Smith. He has firmly established himself as the pre-eminent British designer, and now has a loyal following of fans that are particularly drawn to the funky fashion brand!! With cutting edge designs and superior quality it’s easy to see why Paul Smith has the ability to spark off trends.

For years, Paul Smith wallets have been the most revered and sought after
accessory in men’s fashion, so here at Lapels we decided to find out why.

A Paul Smith wallet is probably the most luxurious wallet a man can own. They incorporate unique designs with exceptional quality making the end result truly stylish and just a little bit funky too!! Each season Paul Smith releases a new
limited collection of wallets and accessories featuring new designs, photographic imagery and patterns, all available in a range of different colours to suit your own personal style.

Many of his designs may look simple and unassuming on the outside, but once opened they reveal a cheeky secret!!! Take the collection entitled
‘naked lady’ for example – the interior of the wallet is adorned with a retro looking illustration of a naked lady!!! The cleverly concealed pinup combined with the soft and luxurious Italian leather Paul Smith is famed for using – makes this wallet an absolute pleasure to use.

In fact, we were so impressed with the unrivalled quality and design of the wallets – we have named
Paul Smith our number one!!! Admittedly this wallet would be more of an investment than some of the cheaper products on the market, but since you’re likely to only buy one wallet every few years – it makes sense to make a quality purchase.

So, is investing in a
Paul Smith wallet worth the expenditure? We definitely think so. Why not take a look at our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and let us know what you think??

One man's money clip is another man's wallet!?!

Every couple of years comes the point in time to start thinking about replacing your wallet. It’s true to say that while most of us are more concerned with what is actually inside the wallet than the wallet itself, this much neglected accessory can quite often let you down in the style department!?! The wallet is now mainly chosen for practicality rather than looks, but with a design as standard as a £5.00 note – small details become crucial!!!

You use your
wallet numerous times each day, sit on it, stuff it full of receipts, have probably put it through the washing machine and tumble dryer on more than one occasion, so chances are if you take a good look at your wallet now it may well be beginning to show a few little tell tale signs of wear and tear!?!

It may not get noticed as much as other accessories, but believe me if you pull out a tatty and bedraggled looking wallet – people will notice!!! Sometimes it’s the little things in life that count and whether you’re at work or on a dinner date polishing your look with the right
accessories could make or break the deal!!

So what does a good wallet need to have?

1. Firstly, a good selection of credit card slots. Even if you only have one debit card to your name at the moment, chances are this will change in the future so be prepared!!!

2. It should be a slim design. Most wallets are kept in the back pocket and it won’t do your street credentials any good if you can’t even sit down properly due to your 6 inch thick money holder!?!

3. We’ve saved the most important tip for last – a good wallet should always be
stylish!! It needs to see you through a multitude of occasions and be equally suitable for work and play, whilst the entire time remaining tough enough to cope with continuous use and abuse!?!

Since you’re likely to only buy one wallet every few years, think carefully about what you choose and make the right
investment. If you pick something that fits the rest of your wardrobe and suits your sense of style – you can’t go far wrong!!!

Here at
Lapels we have all the very latest wallet designs for the style conscious connoisseur!!! Why not take a look at our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and see which design suits your style!?!

Contemporary Luke has a timeless quality!?!?

Taking inspiration from all around him, this edgy combination of contemporary fashion and traditional tailoring has seen the Luke brand become firmly established both in the UK and overseas.

Despite huge success
Luke is an independently owned fashion brand with a tight distribution policy, which enables the company to retain that personal touch often lost in companies of a similar size.

Each
collection offers quality apparel which is not ostentatious, and so the clothing would look equally at home dressed up for a night on the town as it would in more casual settings like the terraces or in the local pub!!!

Luke joins Lapels!?!

We are very pleased to announce that Lapel Clothing is now an official stockist of the highly distinctive and renowned Luke fashion label!!! Luke is quintessentially a British brand that has always strived to stay true to its roots by producing clothing offering a balance of contemporary fashion and traditional tailoring.

Luke Roper was born in Walsall and was the son of a talented wedding dress maker. Throughout his childhood he was continuously exposed to cutting, sewing and pattern drafting, so it was no surprise when he became interested in the fashion industry and by the age of fifteen Luke had started making shirts and trousers for his friends.

After leaving school Luke enrolled in a fashion and textiles course at his local college, which led to a place at Central Saint Martin’s College of Fashion in London where Luke began a 3-year specialist menswear design degree.

He soon became well known for his edgy and detailed designs, pieces which often incorporated his trade mark quirky sense of humour. During the 3 year period he attended college in London he became fascinated by traditional tailoring techniques which inspired him to begin making suits.

Upon his graduation Luke took the position of junior designer with a major brand in order to hone his skills and develop a deeper understanding of the industry. In May 2001, after only six months, he joined forces with his lifelong friends, Simon and Deborah Poole and the
Luke brand label was born!!!

This edgy combination of contemporary fashion and traditional tailoring has seen
Luke clothing build a cult following over the last few years. Why not take a look for yourself and visit our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk

Limited edition snowboard by Paul Smith!?!

Paul Smith has been invited by the Victoria and Albert museum to showcase some of his designs at the Fashion v Sport exhibition now showing at the museum. The exhibition looks at the creative connections between fashion and sport as these days sportswear is seriously cool.
One of the products featured will be a limited edition snowboard featuring a flying carpet print, inspired by a photograph taken by Paul’s father, who was a keen amateur photographer.

Sportswear has become an essential part of the modern wardrobe. Trainers and tracksuits are often more readily worn than suits, and high performance textiles developed for competition are being integrated into high-end fashion. Fashion V Sport examines the way that sports styles are adapted to make fashion statements, both on the street and through high fashion, and how sports and fashion products are consumed, customised and worn.

For full details of the new exhibit visit the Victoria and Albert website at
http://www.vam.ac.uk/

These boots are made for walking!??!

Every journey has a beginning and the Timberland journey began in 1952 when Nathan Swartz bought a half interest in the Abington Shoe Company. Three years later he bought the remaining share of the company and the Timberland brand was born. In 1973, the company began manufacturing its first guaranteed waterproof leather boots and shoes under the Timberland brand name, and in 1978, the name of the company was officially changed to The Timberland Company.

Timberland manufactures shoes and clothes, but is probably most well known for the distinctive Timberland boot that gets instant recognition by people across the world.

We are lucky enough to stock the very latest range of
Timberland footwear so why not check out our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and let us know what you think!!

Bing Crosby and Pete the Penguin!??!

Penguin clothing was first seen in 1955 when Munsingwear – an underwear and military supply company based in Minneapolis – introduced the first iconic golf shirt to America. The shirt was an instant golf classic thanks to a ribbed slice of fabric on the underarm to avoid rips during even the most enthusiastic of golf swings!?!?

The now famous
Penguin logo came about when a salesman spotted a flock of penguins in the window of a New York taxidermist, and bought one of the birds. Before long, ‘Pete’ the penguin had become the official mascot and logo of all golf shirts!!!

Penguin became a wardrobe staple during the 1980’s after regularly being worn by celebrities such as Arnold Palmer, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Richard Nixon. In 2003, the original Penguin was redesigned after retro-fashion hit the headlines again. The new range of Penguin menswear is designed for the younger and more fashion conscious consumer and has now become a legend in its own right!!!

The very latest
Penguin designs are available now on our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk so why not take a look today???

Instant Replay!?!

The Italian brand of Replay was founded by Claudio Buziol in 1978 under the Fashion Box Industries umbrella. The company initially specialised in casual shirts and by 1987 had become an international success.

In 1989
Replay reinvented the humble pair of jeans with its ‘double ring denim’ and sales of the new designer jeans reached a million pairs in just 2 years.

By 1991 a complete range of clothing was being manufactured with a new children’s range being added to the portfolio, and by 1995 it was estimated that a new
Replay store opened every 10 days around the world.

The company celebrated its 25th anniversary during 2006 and proved that
Replay clothing is definitely here to stay!!! We are very proud to stock this stylish Italian brand at Lapel so why not check out our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and see the range for yourself?!!?

Mr Klein I presume!??!

Calvin Klein is one of the leading fashion design studios in the world. The story began in 1968 when Calvin Klein opened his first coat shop within the York Hotel based in New York. Less than a year later he was featured on the front cover of Vogue magazine and described as ‘the supreme master of minimalism’.

The
Calvin Klein portfolio continued to grow and a new underwear line was introduced. During the nineties ‘Marky Mark’ pop singer Mark Wahlberg was featured in a series of ads wearing nothing but the underwear. This campaign proved so successful that underpants even became generally known as ‘calvins’.

Lapel Clothing has this iconic underwear available. To view the full collection, check out our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk where you will find Calvin Klein as well as many other brands.
