Lacoste

Jean René Lacoste (July 2, 1904 - October 12, 1996) was a French tennis player and businessman, nicknamed "the Crocodile" by fans because of his pugnacity on court; he is now known primarily as the namesake of the Lacoste tennis shirt, which he introduced in 1929.

Lacoste was one of The Four Musketeers, French tennis stars who dominated the game in the 1920s and early 1930s. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles in the French, American, and British championships but never made the long trip to Australia to play in their championships. He was the world number one player for both 1926 and 1927.

In 1933, Lacoste founded La Société Chemise Lacoste with André Gillier. The company produced the tennis shirt which Lacoste often wore when he was playing, which had an alligator (generally thought to be a crocodile) embroidered on the chest. In 1963, Lacoste created a sensation in racquet technology by patenting the first tubular steel tennis racquet. Until then, racquets had almost always been made of wood. This new racquet's strings were attached to the frame by a series of wires, which wrapped around the racquet head. The racquet was marketed in Europe under the Lacoste brand, but in the United States it was marketed by Wilson Sporting Goods and achieved critical acclaim and huge popularity as the Wilson T-2000, used by American tennis great Jimmy Connors.

In his 1979 autobiography, Jack Kramer, the long-time tennis promoter and great player himself, included Lacoste in his list of the 21 greatest players of all time.

There are numerous explanations of why Lacoste was originally nicknamed the Crocodile. A 2006 New York Times obituary about Lacoste's son, Bernard, provides an apparently authoritative one. In the 1920s, supposedly, Lacoste made a bet with his team captain about whether he would win a certain match. The stakes were a suitcase he had seen in a Boston store; it was made of crocodile (or alligator) skin. Later, René Lacoste's friend Robert George embroidered a crocodile onto a blazer that Lacoste wore for his matches.

G- Star at Lapel.

From its conception in 1989, G-Star has been known for its innovative and cutting edge style in the world of denim. Pushing the boundaries, continuous experimentation and product development, has led to a strong following worldwide. The rough, rudimentary, and raw characteristics of the bran allows G-Star to maintain its distinct and unorthodox style.

"Just the product" has always been G-Star's philosophy and market approach. The development of the innovative products like Raw Denim, which has had a major influence on the jeans market, was a natural consequence. Since the permiere of Raw Denim in 1996, G-Star has broadened its conecpt to include a newer, edgier image, appealing to all styles, trends and ages while keeping the product in its purest form. Authentic details and functional attributes give the collection a strong sense of identity.

Innovation and perfection of the product are imperative to G-Star. Each season, the jeans-oriented collection serves as the basis of the line, while authentic details and innovative washings are added. The bran has seen multiple breakthroughs in the past few years and continues to reach out to many different markets around the world.

The G-Star brand is a style of all times. Futuristic and cautious. Far-reaching and experimental. Alternative and traditional. G-Star is about making eccentric combinations, and maintaning authenticity. Never one to follow the crowd. Just the product.

Fila at Lapel Clothing!

Fila has produced a short film using the brand’s ambassadors, Danny Dyer and Tamer Hassan aimed to attract cult fans of the actors and the brand as well as creating a buzz for a wider audience. The gangster style film, focuses on the new pre-distressed footwear style, Centre Court, and reveals the product within a clever twist in the final scenes.

Produced by Red Bee Media and directed by Marcus Jones, the short film was shot on location at famous East London haunt, The George Tavern, and surrounding gritty backstreets.

Centre Court, the first of a collection of trainers which have been aged carefully to replicate a perfectly loved and lived in trainer from the 80’s, are the focus for the plot in the film and Dyer and Hassan’s ‘mission’.

The tagline, ‘Fila - We break them in for you… Get the Look Without the Effort’ summarises the carefully scuffed and discoloured aesthetic of each trainer.

The viral film will also be entered into a variety of industry short film festivals. The film supports a key Vintage style within their most comprehensive collection to date and is a testament to Fila’s firm grasp on everything retro.

Fred Perry at Lapel!

Frederick John Perry was an English tennis player and three-time Wimbledon champion who is generally considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. He was the World No. 1 player or the co-World No. 1 player for five years, three times as an amateur and twice as a professional, four of the years being consecutive, from 1934 through 1938.

In the late 1940s, Fred Perry was approached by Tibby Wegner, an Austrian footballer who had invented an anti-perspirant device worn around the wrist. Fred Perry made a few changes and invented the sweatband. Wegner's next idea was to produce a sports shirt, which was to be made from white knitted cotton pique with short sleeves and buttons down the front. Launched at Wimbledon in 1952, the Fred Perry polo shirt was an immediate success. The brand is best known for its laurel logo, which appears on the left breast of the tennis shirts. The laurel logo (based on the old Wimbledon symbol) was stitched into the fabric of the shirt instead of merely ironed on (as was the case with the crocodile logo of the competing Lacoste brand).

In the mid-1950s and through the early 1960s, many considered the Fred Perry brand of male tennis shirts to be the best available. The brand is still best known for its laurel wreath logo, which is on the upper left of the tennis shirts. The laurel logo (based on the old Wimbledon symbol) was stitched into the fabric of the shirt instead of being merely ironed on, as was the case with the crocodile logo of the competing Lacoste brand. Since the 1960s, Fred Perry clothing has been popular with various youth subcultures, including mods, skinheads, and casuals.

Lacoste is headquartered in Paris. Lacoste currently has its production capital in Troyes, France, though they delegate production of international clothing to numerous factories in over 12 countries around the world, including those found in Peru, Morocco, Indonesia, Romania, and Italy.

René Lacoste founded La Chemise Lacoste in 1933 with André Gillier, the owner and President of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm at the time. They began to produce the revolutionary tennis shirt Lacoste had designed and worn on the tennis courts with the crocodile logo embroidered on the chest. Although the company claims this as the first example of a brand name appearing on the outside of an article of clothing.

More recently, Lacostes popularity has surged due to French designer Christophe Lemaire’s work to create a more modern, upscale look. In 2005, almost 50 million Lacoste products sold in over 110 countries. Its visibility has increased due to the contracts between Lacoste and several young tennis players, including American tennis star Andy Roddick, French rising young prospect Richard Gasquet, and Swiss Olympic gold medalist Stanislas Wawrinka. Lacoste has also begun to increase its presence in the golf world, where noted two time Masters Tournament champion José María Olazábal and Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie have been seen sporting Lacoste shirts in tournaments.

Lapel Clothing and Luke 1977

Luke is an independently owned design led UK mens fashion brand with a tight distribution policy, and is only found in selected stores. Luke menswear fashion has firmly established itself as a core forward order brand both in the UK & overseas, being recognised for its edgy, detailed and ultimately practical interpretation on contemporary menswear. Taking inspiration from all the people that surround him, Luke's menswear fashion range has all the components of the modern lad, a gentleman, a working class hero & a bit of a rogue.

The menswear fashion collections are always created for every social need, equally at home in the city bar scene, on the terraces or in the pub.

Luke 1977 designer clothes created by Luke the son of a talented wedding dress maker and throughout his childhood was constantly exposed to cutting, sewing, altering & pattern drafting at his Walsall home.

With all of this going on around him it’s no surprise that by the age of twelve he was already adept at using a sewing machine and he soon became interested in the whole process of the production of garments and began to develop his skills.

By the age of 15 he had started making shirts for his friends. Within a few months he had developed his burgeoning ability to incorporate trousers too. On leaving school Luke enrolled in a fashion and textiles course at his local Walsall College. It was around this time that he and his friends were beginning to go out to the local pubs and house-clubs which created an increasing demand from others for his shirts & trousers. Garments that were stylish and individual but still perceived as being ‘masculine’.

In 1997 Luke earned a place at Central Saint Martins College of Fashion in London where he began a 3-year specialist menswear design degree.

He soon became well known for his edgy, detailed but ultimately practical designs, pieces which often incorporated his trade mark quirky sense of humour.

During the 3 year period he attended Saint Martins he became fascinated by traditional tailoring techniques which inspired him to begin making suits. Now there was a real following for his creations from a variety of people from friends and colleagues to well known celebrities.

Upon his graduation Luke took the position of junior designer with a major brand in order to hone his skills and develop a deeper understanding of the industry, setting down the ground work for starting his own label. He had set himself a target of 3 years work experience but in May 2001, after only six months, he began the collaboration with his life long friends, Simon & Deborah Poole which saw the creation of the ‘Luke’ label.

Fred Perry hand picked his wearers?!?

Fred Perry originally used gauze wrapped around his wrist to protect the racquet handle from perspiration. Fred was approached by Tibby Wegner, a former Austrian footballer, with an idea for marketing a sweatband bearing the Fred Perry name. They marketed the sweatbands by giving them away to the top players at the best tournaments, persuading them to wear them on court, the players did, and Fred Perry Sportswear was launched.

Fred soon developed the business with Wegner by making Fred Perry sports shirts. These shirts were skilfully merchandised by offering them to BBC cameramen, whilst Fred Perry and Dan Maskell both wore them when commentating.

People became aware of the Fred Perry logo, and associated it with Wimbledon and with the world’s finest players.

The company had also produced the perfect accompaniment to the fledging Mod movement. It was stylish, top button fastened under an SB3 or mohair suit, and durable enough to wear all-night and still look fresh in the morning?!?

The Fred Perry shirt instantly became the first crossover brand from sportswear to streetwear?!?

It started one of the most enduring and affectionate relationships between British youth culture and a sportswear brand. The Fred Perry shirt was noticed, adopted and worn in numerous countries around the globe.

Today you can get your hands on a legendary Fred Perry shirt, cardigan, sweater, track top or shoulder bag by simply going to www.lapelclothing.co.uk. We’re sure that Fred would be honoured to see you wearing his brand?!?

Why men wear hats?!?

It wasn't long ago that hats were part of every self-respecting man's daily attire.

Up until the 1960s, most men would have no more left the house without a hat than they would without trousers. Bankers and stockbrokers made the commute into the city wearing bowler hats, gentlemen took to the streets in straw boaters and manual workers passed through the factory gates wearing cloth caps.

Then came the rise of cars. Before cars became common hats were useful items of clothing to keep the weather off?!?

Generally if you look at the history of menswear, in the last 100 years it's been a gradual progression from formal to casual wear. The jacket has gone from a military frock coat to the jacket of a lounge suit, the shirt has gone from something with stiff studded collars to a fold down collar, and the formal, handmade shoe has been replaced, in some cases, with trainers.

Nowadays the expectation we have is that the things we wear will be comfortable?!? And the formal hat fell victim to that general trend.

A lot of younger, casually dressed men are seeking ways to show their individuality. If you are one of these lads, www.Lapelclothing.co.uk has different brands with the like of Lacoste, Paul Smith and Henri Lloyd for you to pick and choose from?!?

Have a look at these comfortable options from Lapel:

If your feet hurt, something is wrong?!?

Nearly four in 10 women buy shoes knowing they do not fit. The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found 37% would wear uncomfortable shoes as long as they were fashionable. And 17% of men admit buying shoes in the wrong size. Although 80% of the women said they suffered foot problems, only four in ten of the men and women sought help?!?

Many of us find it hard to resist a bargain and the latest fashion must-have, but it's important to remember that by buying cheap, ill-fitting shoes, you're not only going to end up in discomfort, but you are also putting your health at risk.

Most people in the UK suffer from a foot problem at some point in their lives, and while many are fairly minor, some can be extremely painful and disabling.

It is important to wear shoes in the correct size that are appropriate for the activity you need them for.

Lapelclothing.com offers men a wide range of proper footwear and trainers. Men prefer Lapel’s footwear not only because they're fashionable, but because they look good, and because they're comfortable?!? At Lapel we know that uncomfortable shoes do not look good, whether they're fashionable or not. Hurty toes and an inability to walk properly are not a good look in the slightest.

Fear no more Lads, Lapel is here and they stock good quality, stylish footwear which won't wreck your feet?!?

Going APE over Lapel’s designer clothes?!?

Baboons at the Knowsley Safari Park had acquired an unfortunate new skill?!? The 140 baboons - who are known for tearing off the odd windscreen wiper or wing mirror - have been causing havoc at the park after learning how to crack open the rooftop luggage boxes and began stealing clothing after helping themselves to the contents.

“Their technique involves the largest baboons jumping up and down on the box, flexing it until the lock bursts open, when the rest of the baboons pile in to see what they can find.”

Let’s face it, nobody wants to see a baboon running up a tree with their brand new Fila Matchday Track Top from www.lapelclothing.co.uk!

Paul Smith

Did you know that at the age of 16, with no career plans or qualifications, Paul Smith was propelled by his father into a menial job at the local clothing warehouse in Nottingham. However he wanted to become a professional racing cyclist, until aged 17 years when Paul was in a terrible accident.

Six months in hospital followed and during this time Paul made some new friends. After leaving hospital he arranged to meet them again and by chance the meeting place was a local pub that was popular with the students from the local art college.

They talked of Mondrian, Warhol, Kokoshka, David Bailey and listened to the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and much more. It was then Paul knew he wanted to be a part of this colourful world of ideas and excitement.

Within 20 years of his introduction to fashion, Paul Smith had established himself as the pre-eminent British designer. Paul Smith has the ability to anticipate, and even spark off trends not only fashion but in the wider context of popular culture. He manages to transmit a genuine sense of humour and mischief mixed with his love of tradition and the classics

Lacoste, synonymous with Lapel

Since the early eighties Lapel have been stacking the shelves with Lacoste Chemis, we have seen the casual movement come and go, being replaced by the madchester era in the late eighties and early nineties only to come full circle with the current eighties revival.

Lacoste has been a staple for lapel, with polo shirts and jumpers selling all through the year. We love the standard colours seen in winter; black, navy, brown etc, they look subtle, chic and understated when sitting next to each other on the shelf.

However nothing can compare to the spring and summer polo collections. There is something about having the vibrant colours of the classic polo stacked up one on top of the other or in neat rows stretching the length of the shelf creating an aesthetically pleasing stripe effect; yellow, green, fuchsia, orange, red, blue and purple to name but a few.

We are loving the current revival, but like all things in fashion they come and go, one thing is for certain though the classic Lacoste polo is and will always be a fashion staple – long live Lacoste.

Visit our entire range at LapelClothing.co.uk or visit one of our stores to see them beautifully lined up on the shelf.

Playboy styling for the man about town!?!

Everyone has heard of the iconic sportswear brand of Fila, but have you been introduced to the more fashion inspired element of the Fila group – the Fila Gold Collection??

Fila Gold was launched in the UK two years ago, after previously only being available in Italy. The collection offers a range of smart casual clothing inspired by the seventies, and shows how retro sportswear has evolved into contemporary fashion for the modern lifestyle. Attention to detail remains paramount, with subtle touches added to combine style and luxury whilst remaining true to the Fila heritage.

All clothing within the
Fila Gold Collection features a new bespoke gold logo badge, customised buttons and trim detailing - all offered in a simple colour pallet with the odd burst of boldness.

The new spring/summer collection for 2009 continues to bring a more directional edge to sports fashion, and features a colour palette of greys and charcoal black, combined with a sprinkling of seasonal colours such as snorkel blue and pillar box red. Luxury fabrics like cashmere and merino wool have been incorporated into sleek silhouettes such as tailored polo shirts and slim fitting cardigans, which are offered alongside more fashion forward jackets.

A firm favourite from the new collection is the slim fit
Watkins polo shirt – paying homage to the glory days of the seventies it is the ultimate in playboy styling!?! The striking colour palette is combined with a fine merino wool knit, making the Watkins polo a fashion essential for the man about town!!

Here at
Lapels we stock the very best of the new Fila Gold Collection. So, if you fancy Italian styling fused with a modern twist – why not take a look at our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk – I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed!?!

Introducing the boy racer of the trainer world!?!

If you looked inside every bloke’s wardrobe I could pretty much guarantee you would find at least one pair of trainers. Whether you’re looking for a casual shoe or a more sporty number, the humble trainer more than fits the bill. Choosing the right footwear is now more like searching for a needle in a haystack with so much choice on offer, so here at Lapels we decided to find out just what it is that makes a good trainer?!?!

Like many things in life, simple and classic is often the best choice. Many trainers now have far too many lines, colours and graphics on them to look stylish, and instead of looking creative and original they end up looking more like the boy racer of the trainer world!?!

A cross between a trainer and a casual shoe is always a winner and when subtly done doesn’t look overcooked on gas mark ‘I’m trying too hard!?!’ The
Osmo trainer by Paul Smith is a true utility shoe that will see you through a multitude of social occasions whilst still oozing class and style.

Choosing the right trainer for you needn’t be complicated, and if you pick something that fits the rest of your wardrobe and suits your sense of style – you can’t go far wrong!?! Just remember to scuff them up a bit first so you don’t look like the new boy at school!?!

Here at
Lapels we have carefully selected our trainers and shoes to bring you the best mix of the latest trends to ensure you always make a good impression, and with designers such as Lacoste, Nanny State, Diesel and Timberland on board you really will be spoilt for choice!?! Why not take a look at our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and see what takes your fancy?!?!

A splash of colour adds a twist to an old favourite!?!

Everyone has heard of the iconic sportswear brand of Fila, and with the current trend for retro fashion riding high many old favourites such as track jackets are making a comeback. One piece of clothing from Fila’s archives is always instantly recognisable though – the Matchday Jacket from the Fila Vintage range.

This vintage style track top is based on the classic jacket famously worn by Bjorn Borg during the mid eighties. The Matchday takes its main influence from the archives, but adds a splattering of modernity to re-style it for a new generation. It’s also hoodless so you won’t get apprehended by the security guard when you visit your local shopping centre!?!

Fila have now introduced a new range of coloured Matchday Jackets for the spring/summer season, and added a new twist to an old favourite!?!

Now nearly 100 years on from the launch of the famous sportswear brand – Fila is as red hot as any fashion brand in the UK!!! Why not take a look for yourself and visit our
website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk where you’ll find many great designs by Fila and of course the new season Matchday Jackets too!?!

Brand new collection by Lacoste in store now!?!

This week has seen the arrival of the brand new spring/summer collection by Lacoste – and boy was it worth the wait!?!

The true story of the
crocodile dates back to 1927 and began as the nickname of Rene Lacoste. Rene was nicknamed 'the alligator' by the American press after a bet he made with the Captain of the French Davis Cup team concerning a suitcase made from alligator skin.

In 1933, Rene
Lacoste and Andre Gillier, the owner and chairman of France's largest knitwear manufacturing firm at the time, set up a company to make the logo embroidered shirt designed by the champion for use on his own tennis court.

The shirt immediately revolutionised mens sportswear, replacing the woven fabric and starched shirts which players had worn on court until that time. The first
Lacoste shirt had a ribbed collar and short sleeves and was made of a light knitted fabric called 'Jersey Petit Pique'. The qualities of comfort on which it built its name still shine through today, providing a different and truely unique product.

Here at
Lapel, we recognise a true legend when we see it, so why not check out our selection of timeless Lacoste Polo Shirts and other products at www.lapelclothing.co.uk

Diesel comes to town!?!

We are very pleased to announce that Lapel Clothing is now a stockist of the contemporary Diesel brand of clothing.

The Diesel story began in 1978 when Renzo Rosso founded his first fashion outlet. His mission was to create a company that took chances and not conform to the usual fashion stereotypes. He surrounded himself with creative and talented people who were chosen for their broad minded attitudes and refusal to be pigeonholed.
Diesel clothing was on the fashion map!!!

From the very beginning
Diesel turned its back on the usual style forecasters and began to carve its own individual path, creating a brand designed for independent people who like to express their own individuality by the way they dress.

Diesel has grown to become a huge international success and is now sold in over 80 countries worldwide!! The brand is still a market leader in pioneering new styles, fabrics and manufacturing methods, which explains why the brand has developed such a cult following and become part of the youth culture worldwide!!!

Diesel clothing has now become a worldwide fashion hit, and the quality and design of each garment has made Diesel clothing a must have for every wardrobe!! We are very proud to stock this iconic label here at
Lapels, so why not check out our website at www.lapelclothing.co.uk and see quality and design at its very best!?!
