Lapel Clothing and Luke 1977

Luke is an independently owned design led UK mens fashion brand with a tight distribution policy, and is only found in selected stores. Luke menswear fashion has firmly established itself as a core forward order brand both in the UK & overseas, being recognised for its edgy, detailed and ultimately practical interpretation on contemporary menswear. Taking inspiration from all the people that surround him, Luke's menswear fashion range has all the components of the modern lad, a gentleman, a working class hero & a bit of a rogue.

The menswear fashion collections are always created for every social need, equally at home in the city bar scene, on the terraces or in the pub.

Luke 1977 designer clothes created by Luke the son of a talented wedding dress maker and throughout his childhood was constantly exposed to cutting, sewing, altering & pattern drafting at his Walsall home.

With all of this going on around him it’s no surprise that by the age of twelve he was already adept at using a sewing machine and he soon became interested in the whole process of the production of garments and began to develop his skills.

By the age of 15 he had started making shirts for his friends. Within a few months he had developed his burgeoning ability to incorporate trousers too. On leaving school Luke enrolled in a fashion and textiles course at his local Walsall College. It was around this time that he and his friends were beginning to go out to the local pubs and house-clubs which created an increasing demand from others for his shirts & trousers. Garments that were stylish and individual but still perceived as being ‘masculine’.

In 1997 Luke earned a place at Central Saint Martins College of Fashion in London where he began a 3-year specialist menswear design degree.

He soon became well known for his edgy, detailed but ultimately practical designs, pieces which often incorporated his trade mark quirky sense of humour.

During the 3 year period he attended Saint Martins he became fascinated by traditional tailoring techniques which inspired him to begin making suits. Now there was a real following for his creations from a variety of people from friends and colleagues to well known celebrities.

Upon his graduation Luke took the position of junior designer with a major brand in order to hone his skills and develop a deeper understanding of the industry, setting down the ground work for starting his own label. He had set himself a target of 3 years work experience but in May 2001, after only six months, he began the collaboration with his life long friends, Simon & Deborah Poole which saw the creation of the ‘Luke’ label.

So head over to Lapel and check out all our Luke 1977 products today!

Fred Perry hand picked his wearers?!?

Fred Perry originally used gauze wrapped around his wrist to protect the racquet handle from perspiration. Fred was approached by Tibby Wegner, a former Austrian footballer, with an idea for marketing a sweatband bearing the Fred Perry name. They marketed the sweatbands by giving them away to the top players at the best tournaments, persuading them to wear them on court, the players did, and Fred Perry Sportswear was launched.

Fred soon developed the business with Wegner by making Fred Perry sports shirts. These shirts were skilfully merchandised by offering them to BBC cameramen, whilst Fred Perry and Dan Maskell both wore them when commentating.

People became aware of the Fred Perry logo, and associated it with Wimbledon and with the world’s finest players.

The company had also produced the perfect accompaniment to the fledging Mod movement. It was stylish, top button fastened under an SB3 or mohair suit, and durable enough to wear all-night and still look fresh in the morning?!?

The Fred Perry shirt instantly became the first crossover brand from sportswear to streetwear?!?

It started one of the most enduring and affectionate relationships between British youth culture and a sportswear brand. The Fred Perry shirt was noticed, adopted and worn in numerous countries around the globe.

Today you can get your hands on a legendary Fred Perry shirt, cardigan, sweater, track top or shoulder bag by simply going to www.lapelclothing.co.uk. We’re sure that Fred would be honoured to see you wearing his brand?!?

Fashion may come and go, but style is timeless?!?
